Volleyball Swept by Cal Lutheran, Larios Hammers Ten Kills


Victoria Larios '11 finished with a team-high ten kills and added eight digs, but Whittier College lost 31-29, 30-16, 30-23 to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rival, California Lutheran University in the Graham Athletics Center on September 21.  With the loss the Poets are now 1-7 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

In an exciting first game, the Poets hammered 14 kills; the same number of kills they had in the rest of the match.  Larios was the only Poet with double-digit kills.  Shanell McMillen '08, who leads the Poets with 101 kills this season, had six kills and two service aces.  Bibi Gonzalez '09 was credited with 16 assists.  Jennifer Salas '10 had a match-high 19 digs to lead Whittier defensively.  She also finished with two aces.

The Regals were led by Summer Plante-Newman with 18 kills, 12 digs and two aces.  Lindsey Benson assisted on 39 of Cal Lutheran's 46 kills.  Elicia Hildreth and Ashley Clark had 12 and 11 digs, respectively.

The Poets are in action again on September 25, when they take on the University of Redlands.  The SCIAC match starts at 7:30pm in the Graham Athletics Center.
