Volleyball Picks Up Non-Conference Win Over La Sierra
Whittier College Volleyball picked up its second win of the
season on September 17, when they took on La Sierra University in
the Graham Athletics Center. The Poets won the match in three
sets (25-14, 25-16, 25-19) to improve their record to 2-5 on the
season.
The Poets dominated the first set with ten kills and just one error
in 25 attempts. La Sierra (1-4) had just four kills and five
errors in 21 attempts. Whittier continued to cruise in the
second set, hammering ten kills with just two errors in 30
attempts. The Poets weren't as overpowering in the third, but
still completed the sweep despite seven errors in 35
attempts. In the match, Whittier had nine service aces
compared to just one for the Golden Eagles. The Poets
finished with five blocks and 43 digs defensively.
Melissa Johnson '10 led the Poet offense with eight kills.
She also led the Poets defensively at the net, with two solo blocks
and two block assists. Keisha O'Brien '10 finished with seven
kills and three aces. Jennifer Salas '10 had a match-high 14
digs and Natalia Barajas '10 pitched in with nine digs. Sara
Araiza '12 was credited with 18 assists.
The Poets are in action again on September 19, when they take on
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a rare neutral site conference
match. The match will be played at the University of La Verne
at 1:00pm.
