Volleyball Picks Up Non-Conference Win Over La Sierra

Whittier College Volleyball picked up its second win of the season on September 17, when they took on La Sierra University in the Graham Athletics Center.  The Poets won the match in three sets (25-14, 25-16, 25-19) to improve their record to 2-5 on the season.

The Poets dominated the first set with ten kills and just one error in 25 attempts.  La Sierra (1-4) had just four kills and five errors in 21 attempts.  Whittier continued to cruise in the second set, hammering ten kills with just two errors in 30 attempts.  The Poets weren't as overpowering in the third, but still completed the sweep despite seven errors in 35 attempts.  In the match, Whittier had nine service aces compared to just one for the Golden Eagles.  The Poets finished with five blocks and 43 digs defensively.

Melissa Johnson '10 led the Poet offense with eight kills.  She also led the Poets defensively at the net, with two solo blocks and two block assists.  Keisha O'Brien '10 finished with seven kills and three aces.  Jennifer Salas '10 had a match-high 14 digs and Natalia Barajas '10 pitched in with nine digs.  Sara Araiza '12 was credited with 18 assists.

The Poets are in action again on September 19, when they take on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a rare neutral site conference match.  The match will be played at the University of La Verne at 1:00pm.
