Volleyball Wins Back-to-Back Matches
Whittier College Volleyball picked up a pair of wins last week,
including their first SCIAC win of the season, against Caltech on
October 10 and La Sierra on October 11. It is the first time
this season the Poets have claimed back-to-back wins as their
record climbs to 4-15 overall and 1-6 in conference play.
The Poets cruised to a straight-set victory against Caltech 25-17,
25-16, 25-9. Keisha O'Brien '10 led all players with eleven
kills in just 17 attempts. She also pitched in with five
digs. Frankie Marshall '12 and Shannon Orlins '11 each
hammered four kills. Orlins also led the defense with one
solo block and two block assists. Justine Martinez '12 led
the Poets with seven digs. Alyssa Carillo '12 and Sara Araiza
'12 were credited with 20 and 12 assists, respectively.
The following day, the Poets traveled to Riverside, Calif., to take
on La Sierra University. Once again, Whittier disposed of
their opponent in straight sets 25-18, 29-27, 25-19. O'Brien
led the way again with 12 kills and 11 digs. Marshall
finished with five kills and Kashima Patridge '11 added four kills
of her own and had a match-high five service aces. Natalie
Barajas '10 contributed eight digs. Araiza handed out 20
assists.
The Poets take a brief hiatus from competition before returning to
the court against Pomona-Pitzer on October 21. The SCIAC
match begins at the Graham Athletics Center at 7:30pm.
