Poets can't avoid season sweep to La Verne

LA VERNE, Calif. - The Whittier College volleyball team dropped its second game of the season to the University of La Verne on Wednesday evening. The Leopards completed the season sweep of the Poets with a 25-11, 25-10, 25-8 win in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match.
Whittier (6-9, 3-7 SCIAC) totaled 19 kills for the match on 86 attempts. The Poets had an attacking percentage of -.058 with 24 errors.
As a team the purple and gold registered five services aces led by Aya Nakano and Vanessa Amran who each had two. Ashley Terich chipped in with one ace.
Nakano led the offensive attack with 10 kills and an attacking percentage of .214. Amran once again had a team-high assists with 13.
Justine Martinez had a team-high 11 defensive digs while Nakano, Natalie Barajas, Shannon Orlins and Melissa Johnson all had one blocking assist.
La Verne (14-11, 6-3 SCIAC) finished with 36 kills on 80 attempts and only eight errors. It had an attacking percentage of .350 and equaled Whittier's total of five service aces.
The Poets return to action on Saturday, October 17, as they host Chapman and King's (Pa.) in a three-team tournament. The first match is scheduled for a 12 pm start.
