COLORADO SPRINGS, Co. – The Whittier College volleyball team wrapped up the Colorado Invitational this morning as they dropped a straight sets decision to No. 20 Colorado College 25-17, 25-17, 25-19.
Whittier now drops to 8-13, 3-7 SCIAC and drops their second game to Colorado College this season falling in straight sets back on September 1 during the Pacific Coast Classic.
For the second straight match Whittier was led on offense by Lauren Whiteman who tallied 10 kills on 20 attempts, while Alayna Rigo and Alyssa Sialaris each finished with eight a piece. The Poets combined for a .066 hitting percentage but saw Rigo, Ruth Guziec, and Lindsey Kish finish with double digit digs defensively.
Torrey Mitsunaga got the nod at setter and finished with 22 assists.
A day after being swept by Baker University the Poets remained close with Colorado College staying within three a majority of the first set before pulling within one at 14-13, but saw Colorado College score four unanswered to go back out in front 18-13 eventually taking the first 25-17.
Whittier jumped out in front in the second set 4-1 and then 8-4 but saw Colorado College rattle off six unanswered to take their first lead 10-8, which they built upon going up as much as nine at 22-13. After a late rally from Whittier that pulled them within seven, the Tigers were able to finish off the set to go up 2-0.
In the final set Whittier used a 3-0 run to go up early but saw CC claw their way back to even the score up at 8-8, but Whittier again grabbed the lead back two more times and saw CC fight their back to even the set up twice more at 10-10 and then 13-13.
After the Tigers regained a two point lead, Whittier found themselves fighting back to tie the set up at 15-15, but that's as close as they would get as Colorado College rallied off five straight points to extend their lead to 20-15. From there it was all Tigers as CC went on to win five of the next nine points to secure their 18th win of the season.
The Poets return to Los Angeles this evening and begin preparing for SCIAC play as they host the Athena's of Claremont-M-S next Wednesday, October 17 beginning at 7:30pm.
