WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Volleyball teams losing skid extended to seven games Tuesday evening as they fell 25-15, 21-25, 25-14, 25-19 to the Sagehens of Pomona-Pitzer in the Graham Athletic Center.
Pomona-Pitzer (6-4, 2-0 SCIAC) opened up the match hitting .483 in the first set that helped them jump in front early.
Whittier bounced back in the second however using a 5-0 run midway through behind kills from freshmen Alaina Rhee (Kent, WA) and Aubrey Caires (Garnderville, NV) that gave the Purple & Gold a 14-8 lead. Rebecca Slattery (Los Altos, Calif.) and Rhee would combo soon after coupled with a service ace from Clarissa Standafer (Alta Loma, Calif.) that moved the score to 18-11 and it would be Whittier from that point as they would weather a Sagehen comeback of five unanswered with kills from Rhee and Olive Anagu (Culver City, Calif.).
Pomona-Pitzer got back on track in the third set jumping in front 9-1 and they didn't look back as the deficit moved to 19-9 before they would grab the third frame and a 2-1 advantage.
The Poets fought to level the match at two in the fourth after getting within four at 22-18 but again an early lead by PP was a gap to much to overcome as the Sagehens would win three of the final four points to clinch the road victory.
Slattery led the Poets with 12 kills and was the only one in double figures. Anagu totaled eight kills and Caires had seven. Standafer was busy in the backrow registering 16 digs and freshman Camryn Purdom (Moreno Valley, Calif.) led up front with 16 assists.
Whittier (2-10, 0-3 SCIAC) returns to action this Friday, September 23 as they take on Caltech on the road beginning at 7:00pm.
