WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Volleyball team played the Athena's of Claremont-M-S tight early but couldn't hold on as they fell in straights 25-16, 25-12, 25-16 in the Graham Athletic Center.

The Purple & Gold have now lost two straight as they drop to 9-17, 5-10 SCIAC, while Claremont-M-S improves to 21-2, 13-2 SCIAC.

CMS hit .417 in the first set but couldn't put the Poets away until late.  Whittie trailed 12-5 but fought back to level the frame at 14-14 following six unanswered, sparked by two service aces from Camryn Purdom (Moreno Valley, Calif.) and a kill from Alaina Rhee (Kent, WA).

But an ensuing 8-0 run by the Athena's would turn the momentum back as they would grab the first set 25-16.

The Purple & Gold attempted to keep the second set close as well early pulling within one at 8-7 after another service ace from Purdom but another run, this time of four straight would keep CMS in front for good as they would add another 4-1 run before closing out the stanza winning eight of the final nine points.

The Poets were down 2-0 and 8-4 in the final set but again fought to pull within three at 15-12 following kills from Rebecca Slattery (Los Altos, Calif.) and Olive Anagu (Culver City, Calif.).  But again the Athena's would roll with an ensuing rally of nine of the next ten points before clinching the match.

Slattery again posted double digit kills finishing with 14.  Casie Lowden (Glendora, Calif.) finished with five, while also registering 10 digs.  Two other players joined her in the double digit digs category including Hunter Durham (Kennewick, WA) (15) and Purdom, who also had 15 assists and three aces.

Whittier wraps up their 2016 season tomorrow night, Saturday, October 29 as they host Occidental College beginning at 7:00pm.
