REDLANDS, Calif. –The Whittier College Volleyball team made quick work of the University of Redlands Tuesday evening sweeping the Bulldogs 25-21, 25-18, 25-22.
The Poets have now swept the competition for the fourth time this season and now improve to 9-4, 3-2 SCIAC.
Whittier jumped in front 5-1 in the first set and despite facing a couple hiccups where they trailed by at most two, they were able to rattle off a 7-1 run midway through led by the serving of Clarissa Standafer (Alta Loma, Calif.) and Camryn Purdom (Moreno Valley, Calif.). This gave WC a 19-14 lead and they didn't look back as Ashley Whittall (Norwalk, Calif.), and Aubrey Caires (Garnderville, NV) would seal the first frame with three kills.
They continued the momentum into the second stanza and despite seeing UR stay within striking distance early, they were able to put the Bulldogs in a hole as they finished off the set with a 9-1 run thanks to four kills and strong serving from Alaina Rhee (Kent, WA).
Redlands attempted to comeback in the third holding an early 5-2 lead and pulling within two at 18-16. They also were able to tie things up at 21-21 providing some pressure but Whittall was able to connect with a kill followed by three errors from UR that sealed the sweep.
Makenzie Thieme (Corona, Calif.) finished the match with eight kills along with Whittall and they combined for 14 digs. Purdom added 20 assists and nine digs and Standafer registered 11 digs in the backrow.
Whittier returns home this Friday, September 29 as they host Caltech beginning at 7:00pm.
