WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Volleyball team is heading to Southwestern (TX) for the NCAA Division III West Regionals. On Monday morning, the NCAA released the field for the 64-team Women's Volleyball Championships and the bracket has the Poets traveling to Georgetown, Texas for the opening rounds of the tournament.
The berth into the NCAA Division III National Championships is the first in program history for the Purple & Gold as they posted an 18-9, 10-6 SCIAC record this season and will now faceoff against the host Southwestern (TX) this Friday, November 10 beginning at 8:00pm.
Whittier has seen themselves achieve a National Ranking as high as No. 30 and a West Regional ranking as high as No. 3 but still found themselves bumped out of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Post Season tournament. They now have an at-large bid and will join the Claremont-M-S Athenas in Texas for the Regionals.
Of the eight host sites, the Poets land in arguably the toughest Regional with four teams ranked in the top six in the country. The four ranked teams include No. 1 Colorado College, No. 2 Southwestern (TX), No. 5 Trinity (TX), and No. 6 Claremont-M-S. The other programs that round out the bracket include New Rochelle, Pacific Lutheran, Whittier, and UT-Dallas.
The winner of Friday's Whittier vs. Southwestern (TX) match will take on the winner of Claremont-M-S(TX) and UT-Dallas on Saturday at 5:00pm.
The Regional Championship match is slated for Sunday afternoon. The winner of the Regional will advance to the Division III Women's Volleyball Championships on Nov. 16-18 in Grand Rapids, Mich.
