Water Polo Wins One of Four at Claremont Tourney, Galvin '08 Leads Poets in Scoring for the Weekend


Caroline Galvin '08 scored seven goals in four games, but Whittier College lost three out of four games at the Claremont Colleges Tournament on March 17 and 18.  The Poets (7-11) lost 8-7 to California State-East Bay and 10-5 to Colorado State on day one.  Day two started well with an 11-4 victory over the University of Arizona, but in the final game of the tournament, the Poets lost 10-9 to George Washington University.

In game one versus East Bay, Karley Perine '08 led the Poets with four goals.  She also drew three penalties and had a steal.  Galvin scored twice, drew three penalties and added a steal.  Nicole Sandoval '08 finished with a goal, two assists and three steals.  Catherine Gouge '08 added two assists and two steals.  Sarah Wills '09 made four saves in goal.

Against Colorado St., Galvin scored two goals and assisted on another.  Perine, Indre Lauraitis '10 and Sarah Peel '10 each scored a goal.  Perine also drew four penalties.  sandoval led the team with three steals.  Wills made seven saves in the loss.

In the win over Arizona, Gouge led the way offensively with three goals and an assist.  On the defensive end, she made four steals.  Sandoval finished with two goals, three assists and four steals.  Ashley Papenbrock '08 also had a pair of goals and three assists.  Lauraitis and Robin Olmstead '07 added a goal and two steals apiece.  Wills had her best showing of the weekend with ten saves.

In the final game against George Washington, Papenbrock had a hat trick, an assist and two drawn penalties.  Peel scored twice and had two assists.  Sandoval anchored the defense with seven steals and contributed with a goal and four assists offensively.   Olmstead, Galvin and Gouge all scored one goal.  Wills made eight saves in goal.
