2007 Poets Women's Water Polo Recap

The 2007 Whittier College women's water polo team finished the season with their fifth straight double-digit win total under head coach Mitch Carty, going 12-16 overall and 5-5 in conference play.  The Poets began their season winning three of their first five games, including three wins at the Chapman Tournament on February 24 and 25.  They picked up big non-conference wins over UC-Santa Cruz, Iona University and St. Francis University at the Lancer Invitational as they headed into the SCIAC schedule.  After going 3-4 in the conference regular season, the Poets were the fifth seed in the 2007 SCIAC Championships.  They lost their first round game to Cal Lutheran, but bounced back to win the final two games of the season against Caltech in the Consolation Semifinals and Occidental in the Consolation Finals.

Three Poets were named to all-conference teams for their performances this season.  Karley Perine was named to the All-SCIAC first team to go along with a second team All-American nod.  She led the Poets with 80 goals and 55 drawn penalties.  Her 2007 totals placed her in second on the single season goals list and third on the single season drawn penalties list.  She is currently fourth on the career scoring list.  Caroline Galvin earned second team All-SCIAC honors.  She was second on the team with 78 goals and 52 drawn penalties this season.  She also finished third with 27 assists and led the team with 14 field blocks.  She is third on the all-time scoring list.  Nicole Sandoval was awarded a SCIAC Honorable Mention spot.  She led the team with 132 steals, breaking her own single season record from a year ago.  She is also the Poets' all-time leader in the category with 339.5 career steals.
