2007 Poets Women's Water Polo Recap

The 2007 Whittier College women's water polo team finished the
season with their fifth straight double-digit win total under head
coach Mitch Carty, going 12-16 overall and 5-5 in conference
play. The Poets began their season winning three of their
first five games, including three wins at the Chapman Tournament on
February 24 and 25. They picked up big non-conference wins
over UC-Santa Cruz, Iona University and St. Francis University at
the Lancer Invitational as they headed into the SCIAC
schedule. After going 3-4 in the conference regular season,
the Poets were the fifth seed in the 2007 SCIAC
Championships. They lost their first round game to Cal
Lutheran, but bounced back to win the final two games of the season
against Caltech in the Consolation Semifinals and Occidental in the
Consolation Finals.
Three Poets were named to all-conference teams for their
performances this season. Karley Perine was named to the
All-SCIAC first team to go along with a second team All-American
nod. She led the Poets with 80 goals and 55 drawn
penalties. Her 2007 totals placed her in second on the single
season goals list and third on the single season drawn penalties
list. She is currently fourth on the career scoring
list. Caroline Galvin earned second team All-SCIAC
honors. She was second on the team with 78 goals and 52 drawn
penalties this season. She also finished third with 27
assists and led the team with 14 field blocks. She is third
on the all-time scoring list. Nicole Sandoval was awarded a
SCIAC Honorable Mention spot. She led the team with 132
steals, breaking her own single season record from a year
ago. She is also the Poets' all-time leader in the category
with 339.5 career steals.
