Women's Water Polo Season Under Way at Redlands Tournament

Poets Women's Water Polo began their season at the University of
Redlands Mini-Tournament on January 27. Whittier lost 13-7 to
Division I opponent, California Baptist University.
Catherine Gouge '08 scored the first goal of the game against Cal
Baptist, but the Poets gave up five straight to lose a lead they
would not regain. Goals by Nicole Sandoval '08 and Caroline
Galvin '08 rounded out their first half scoring as Whittier trailed
8-3 at the halftime whistle. Galvin scored the only Poet goal
in the third quarter and Cal Baptist extended their lead to
11-4. Whittier outscored the Lancers 3-2 in the final frame,
but it was too little, too late. Galvin finished with two
goals and two assists. Sandoval scored two goals and added an
assist. Gouge also scored twice and led the defense with four
steals. Karley Perine '08 and Veronica Becerra '11 scored one
goal apiece.
The Poets aren't in action again until March 1, when they travel to
the University of California-Santa Cruz for the Annual Slugfest
Tournament. Their opponents in the Slugfest have yet to be
announced.
