Women's Water Polo Plays Four at Slugfest

Karley Perine '08 and Caroline Galvin '08 combined for 13 goals
in four games, but Whittier College left the UC-Santa Cruz Slugfest
without a win on March 1 and 2. The Poets lost 10-2 to the
hosts in their first game of the weekend and 10-5 to Cal State,
East Bay in game two. On day two, they lost 14-5 to Santa
Clara followed by a tough 10-9 loss to Cal State, Monterey Bay in
the final game of the tournament.
Galvin scored both Poet goals in the loss to Santa Cruz. Both
goals came in the third quarter when Whittier already trailed
8-0. The Banana Slugs added a pair of goals in the final
quarter for the 10-2 victory.
Perine led the Poets against East Bay with four of the five Poet
goals. Catherine Gouge '08 scored the other goal.
Whittier fell behind early, trailing 3-0 at the end of the first
quarter. Goalie Ashley Papenbrock '08 and the Poet defense
held strong in the second, not allowing a goal, but the offense
couldn't capitalize, scoring just once to cut the lead to 3-1 at
halftime. East Bay broke the game open in the third with four
more goals and didn't look back on their way to the 10-5 win.
The Poets allowed three quick goals to Santa Cruz on day two, but
Galvin came back with two of her three goals in the game to make
the score 3-2 at the end of one. But Division I Santa Cruz
opened a six-goal lead in the second quarter and the Poets could
not recover. Xenia Castillo '11 scored twice for the Poets in
the loss.
The weekend finale was a battle with Monterey Bay that went down to
the wire. Galvin, Castillo, Gouge and Perine all scored twice
in the game. Lily Broussard '11 also pitched in with a
goal. Once again, the Poets trailed early on, giving Monterey
Bay a 2-0 lead in the first quarter. Both teams put up four
goals in the second to make the score 6-4 at the break. The
third quarter proved to be the game-breaker for the Poets, as they
lost the quarter 4-3. They didn't go down without a fight as
Perine scored with just under two minutes left in the game to cut
the lead to two goals. Galvin scored with 34 seconds left to
get the Poets within one, but the were unable to find the equalizer
and Monterey Bay escaped with the one-goal victory.
The Poets are in action again on March 15 and 16 when they take
part in the Claremont Convergence Tournament.
