Women's Water Polo Gets Back-to-Back SCIAC Wins


Whittier College women's water polo got a pair of much-needed conference wins against the University of La Verne on April 9 and Caltech on April 12.  The Poets are now 5-11 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

The Poets won 14-4 over La Verne.  Caroline Galvin '08 led the team with four goals.  Veronica Becerra '11 had a team-high six points, recording three goals and three assists.  Xenia Castillo '11 finished with two goals and two assists and Sarah Peel '10 scored two goals and assisted on another.  Catherine Gouge '08 scored once and was credited with four assists.  Nicole Sandoval '08, the Poets all-time leader in steals, had five steals in the game to go with a goal and two assists.  Ashley Papenbrock '08 made nine saves in goal.

Whittier cruised to a 20-2 victory against Caltech.  Sandoval led the way with four goals, two assists and nine steals.  Peel also scored four goals.  Becerra scored twice and added five assists.  Galvin scored three goals, raising her team-leading season total to 41.  Amanda Owen '11 and Sara Wolff '11 each scored twice.  Indre Lauraitis '10 had a goal and six assists.  Gouge had one goal, two assists and five steals.  Castillo was credited with three assists.  Papenbrock made 12 saves and helped out the offense with an assist.

The Poets have two more conference games before heading to the SCIAC Tournament.  They are currently in a fourth place tie with Occidental College in the SCIAC standings.  Up next, the Poets face-off with Pomona-Pitzer in the final home game of the season.  Senior Night from the Slade Aquatics Center begins at 5:00pm.  You can listen to a broadcast of the game at www.sportsnetusa.net.
