Castillo named second-team All-SCIAC, Thoreson honorable mention
LOS ANGELES - The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference announced its 2009 women's water polo all-conference team and Whittier College was honored with one second-team honoree and one honorable mention selection.
Sophomore attacker Xenia Castillo garnered a spot on the second-team after she set a new school record for drawn ejections in a single season. Castillo drew an unheralded 98 ejections which is 23 more than the previous school record of 75 held by Kim Charlson set in 2006.
The Los Angeles native ranked third on the team in goals (33) and assists (20), first in steals (60) and finished the season with a 31 percent shooting percentage. Two of her goals came in man up situations.
Freshman Katrina Thoreson earned an honorable mention selection to the all-conference team. She led the team with 64 goals and added 17 assists. Eight of her goals came in man up situations as she had a 34 percent shooting percentage.
The Poets finished the season ranked sixth in the SCIAC with a 9-18 record, 2-6 mark in conference play.
