Poets finish sixth at SCIAC Championships


CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Whittier College women's water polo team finished the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships in sixth place after it beat the University of La Verne, 10-2, on Saturday, April 25, and lost in the fifth place game to Claremont-M-S, 10-5, on Sunday, April 26.

The Poets (9-18, 2-6 SCIAC) dominated the game from the start against La Verne. WC jumped out to a 7-0 halftime lead behind a three-goal half from Sarah Peel.

The purple and gold opened the game with back-to-back scores within 30 seconds of each other at the 3:56 mark and 3:27 mark and added its third goal of the first quarter at the 1:52 mark.

Xenia Castillo, Arianna Weisenburger and Katrina Thoreson all tallied goals in the first quarter.

Peel started the second quarter scoring for the Poets with a goal at the 6:38 mark and added her second goal of the quarter with 5:29 left till the intermission. Thoreson registered her second goal of the game at the 6:04 mark. Peel scored her second 6/5 goal of the quarter with 37 second left to put the Poets up by seven at half.

Anahisa Aguirre made 10 first half saves and added eight in the second half to give her 18 for the game. Of her 18 saves six came in 5/6 situations. She also added two assists.

La Verne scored its only goals of the game in the third quarter but it wasn't enough as the Poets cruised to the eight goal win.

Indre Lauraitis scored her first of two goals on the day in third quarter and Peel got her game-high fourth goal of the afternoon at the 5:40 mark of the fourth quarter. Lauraitis scored the game's final goal with 2:27 to play in the game.

Weisenburger, Thoreson and Veronica Becerra joined Aguirre with two assists each.

The Poets kept its fifth place game against CMS close until the fourth quarter. The Athenas held a 6-4 half time lead and led by as many as three goals on two separate occasions.

WC got on the board first with as Peel scored her first of two goals on the game just 2:33 into the first quarter. However, that would be the only goal of the quarter for the purple and gold as CMS scored four unanswered goals to lead 4-1.

Whittier ended the Athena run at the 7:07 mark of the second half as Peel made good on her second goal of the game. CMS answered with a goal at 5:04 but WC scored two of the final three goals to cut into the Claremont lead.

Thoreson and Becerra scored consecutive goals for Whittier at 4:42 and 2:56 of the second quarter each, respectively.

CMS and Whittier traded third goals as Thoreson recorded her second score of the game with 1:57 to play in the quarter to make the score 7-5. That would be as close as Whittier would get as the Athenas outscored the Poets 3-0 in the final frame en route to the win.

Aguirre made 14 saves which includes six in the third quarter. Thoreson drew a team-high four ejections.

Whittier ended the regular-season and conference tournament in sixth place.
