Castillo sets school record in loss to Sagehens


WHITTIER, Calif. - The Whittier College women's water polo team dropped a 13-6 decision to Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe Pomona-Pitzer this past Saturday, April 4.

The Poets (6-14, 0-3 SCIAC) were held scoreless through the first 12:37 of the game as they didn't score until the 3:23 mark of the second quarter. The goal by Katrina Thoreson ended a seven goal run by Pomona to make the score 7-1.

The Sagehens scored the game's next four goals to extend its lead to 11-1 before Thoreson cashed in on her second goal of the game. WC trailed 12-3 at the end of the third quarter.

The purple and gold outscored Pomona 3-1 in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore Xenia Castillo recorded seven drawn ejections which gives her 80 for the season. That mark sets a new single-season school record. The old record was 75 set in 2006. She also added two assists and four steals.

Thoreson finished the game with five goals while Sarah Peel added one goal.

Anahisa Aguirre made 15 saves in the loss.
