RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Whittier College Women's Water Polo team got their season underway Saturday as they took part in the CBU Invite. But there they faced off against tough competition including No. 20 Loyola Marymount and No. 2 USC.
Game 1 (Loyola Marymount (L, 20-6)
Whittier found their first tough test of 2017 in the Lions who outscored the Purple & Gold 14-4 in the first half. The four goals came from Anastacia Gonzalez (Montebello, Calif.), Zyania Morales (Commerce, Calif.), Marina Daroca Bazan (Barcelona, Spain), and Isabella Gorrocino (East Los Angeles, Calif.).
The second half was a defensive stand with Whittier limiting LMU to just six goals but only managed to get two themselves from Jenel Rivera (Whittier, Calif.) and Gorrocino.
Game 2 (USC; L, 22-4)
Whittier found it tough to score against the Trojans in the second game of the invite being held scoreless in the first half and finding themselves trailing 11-0 at the half. Whittier found the back of the net three times in the third from Morales and Gorrocino (2) and would tack on another from Daroca Bazan in the fourth but it wouldn't be enough to top the No. 2 ranked program in the country.
Montoya got the start between the posts and finished with 10 saves and a steal.
Whittier returns to the pool this Saturday, February 4 as they host the Whittier Mini-Tournament with match-ups against Cal Baptist (12:00pm) and Concordia (Calif.) (6:00pm).
