Cross Country Competes at Westmont Invite, Women Finish Sixth


The Whittier College men's and women's cross country teams took part in the Westmont Invitational hosted by Westmont College in Santa Barbara, Calif., on September 15.  The men's team had just four participating runners, not qualifying them for team scores, but the women were able to make a sixth place finish with 158 points in the eight-team invite.

On the men's side, Thomas Martinez '11 recorded the fifth best time in Whittier College history on the 8k Westmont course with a 28:23 finish.  The time was good for 17th place in the event out of 75 runners.  Bryce Holewinski '11 finished in 29th with a time of 29:27.  Nick Daum '08 took 48th with a time of 32:22.  J.T. Nagayama '10 finished in 61st with a time of 24:57.

For the women, Darlene Partida '10 continued her 2006 All-SCIAC form as the medalist for the Poets with a 16th place finish and a time of 20:50.  The time was the 6th fastest in Whittier history on the 5k Westmont course.  Jessica Mena '11 was next for the Poets in 41st place in the 79-runner field.  She finished with a time of 22:44.  Adrianna Durflinger '09 was less than a minute behind in 45th place with a time of 23:10.  Nadine Rice '11 finished 51st in 23:45 and Tessa Padilla '11 rounded out the Poets top five in 55th with a time of 23:59.

The Poets are at the Golden West Invitational on September 22.  The race starts at 9am in Huntington Beach, Calif.
