Callaway, Airola, lead team in tune-up for SCIACs


LA MIRADA, Calif. - The Whittier College men's and women's cross country teams returned to action on Saturday morning at the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Multi Duals at La Mirada Regional Park and finished in sixth and fourth place, respective.

On the women's side sophomore Michele Callaway finished fifth over with a time of 23:18.59 in the 6k race. Molly Litherland ran her best collegiate race and finished 13th in a time of 23:56.95.

Two more sophomore runners finished third and fourth for the purple and gold as Candace Wray clocked in at 24:18.52 and Eva Aguilar ran a 24:23.22 to place 22nd and 24th, respectively.

Freshman Christine Verduzco rounded out the top five for the Poets with a 27th place finish in a time of 24:39.20.

The women's field had a total of 98 runners.

The men's field was slightly smaller (87 runners) and the top Poet came in 12th place. Travis Airola ran a 27:50.88 to lead the purple and gold.

Juan Bustos was the second Whittier runner to cross the line. He place 39th in a time of 29:34.21.

Marco Leone, Bryce Holewinski and Thomas Martinez round out the top five for the Poets. Leone placed 49th (30:01.18), Holewinski came in 51st place (30:08.66) and Martinez finished in 54th place (30:32.63).

The Poets have a week off before they return to action for the SCIAC Championships on Saturday, October 31.
