Callaway and Wray earn SCIAC Conference Honors

CHINO, Calif. -The Whittier College men's and women's cross country teams returned to action on Saturday morning as they competed in the SCIAC Championships.  The women ended up taking 5th place in the championships thus dropping them into a tie with Redlands for 4th place in the final conference standings.  The men placed 8th in the championships thus having them finish in 7th place in the final conference standings.

There were individual highlights though on the women's side as Michelle Callaway placed 4th out of 109 runners with a time of 23:44.85 thus earning her a 1st-Team All-Conference selection.  Candace Wray stepped up to the occasion and had one of her best runs of the season as she placed 16th overall with a time of 24:32.03 thus earning herself a spot on the 2nd-Team.

Freshman Christine Verduzco had a gutsy performance placing 25th overall with a time of 24:58.40 placing her in the top ranked freshman runners in the SCIAC Conference.

On the men's side sophomore Travis Airola placed in the twenties overall but given the ability levels and injuries of the Poets, they were unable to produce a competitive score.  One specific injury hurt the Poets as Kevin Mancilla who was the Poets top runner in a previous meet this season suffered a severe ankle sprain on Thursday night thus forcing him to run with a lot of pain and definitely not at his best.

The Poets get a week off before returning to action as they travel to Pomona-Pitzer to participate in the NCAA West Regional Cross Country Championships beginning Saturday, November 14th with the Men beginning at 9:45am and the girls at 9:00am.
