Greg Phillips enters his 23rd year as head cross country coach and track distance coach.  He teaches in the Dept. of Kinesiology and Leisure Studies, served 11 years as head track & field coach from 1996-2006, and directed the club sports program from 1994 to 2001.  Phillips competed as a distance runner himself at the DI level and can often be found running with members of Whittier's teams.  He has been honored as West Region Coach-of-the-Year and one of many highlights was a women's team that qualified for the national championships; a first national championships appearance by any women's team in school history and the smallest college to ever qualify for a women's DIII cross country championships.

Chuck Laine begins his 28th season as assistant cross country coach.  Dr. Laine is a professor of economics and has served as the chairperson for the Business Administration Department.  He has competed in over 330 races himself, and once went over three years without missing a day of running.  "I am very fortunate to have Chuck work with us", said Phillips.  "The team respects his wisdom in all matters related to academics and athletics.  He is our team statistician and can calculate places and paces in the blink of an eye."

Luis Ibarra enters his third year as an assistant coach for the cross country and track programs. He is Whittier's school record holder for the 3000m Steeplechase (9:10) and currently competes for Nike Team Run LA. Coach Ibarra is a three time qualifier for the Mexican National Track & Field Championships and competed in the NCAA Division III National Track & Field Championships while a student-athlete at Whittier.  According to Phillips, "Luis is a positive and enthusiastic motivator and more than capable of pushing our top runners in workouts."
