#5 David Tucci

WC vs. CIT Preview:

Still in search of their first SCIAC win the Poets will host Caltech on Friday. Coming off a promising series against La Verne, Whittier will look to continue a 16-game winning streak (since 2002) against the Beavers. In 2009 WC swept the three games set, 15-4, 15-2, and 8-0.

The Poets outscored Caltech 39-to-6 in '09. WC totaled 43 hits, 12 being of the two-bag variety, three triples and a homerun. As a team the Poets spread their hits across 13 different players, hitting .391 as a team. Andrew Vallejo (6), Ryan Crawford (4), Reed Tuttle (4), and David Tucci (3) all had a multi-hit series. Kevin Pigott and his brother Andrew Pigott only allowed two hits on their way to striking out six Caltech hitters. The pitching staffed had 27 strikeouts with a 2.25 ERA.

Despite the wet weather last weekend Whittier (1-12, 0-6 SCIAC) was able to get their three game series in against the Leopards, moving Saturday's double-header to Sunday. In the first game, the Poets showed early offensive at La Verne taking a four run lead into the sixth inning behind the arm of Mike Rueda. Offensively WC was lead by Vallejo who went 3-for-9 and Darby Weppner who had three doubles. Tuttle added thee more hits, while Tucci went 2-for-2 on Sunday in his lone start. Despite their offensive production the rest of the purple and gold bats were held at bay while the pitching staff surrendered 29 runs (25 earned) on the series. However, Tyler Bogart and Weppner combined for seven innings in three appearances and did not surrender at run.

Losing three games to La Verne was not he biggest loss of the week. Sophomore first basemen Austin Starus was injured Friday. He broke his thumb trying to field a throw on a bunt attempt. Straus received surgery this past Wednesday, his return for the season is unlikely at this point.

Caltech (0-10, 0-9 SCIAC) was swept this past weekend in their SCIAC match-up against Occidental. The Beavers lost on Friday at home 11-4 and dropped two on Sunday in Los Angeles, 11-1 and 14-1. The series was also affected by the poor weather.

Friday at home (2:30 pm) the Poets will hand the ball to Bogart making his first start of the year. Through the series expect to see head coach Mike Rizzo go deep into his bench to try and fill the void left by Straus. The Beavers will attempt to host the finale Saturday in Pasadena, Calif., at 11 am and 2:30 pm pending the weather.
