NEWBERG, Ore. – The Whittier College Baseball team wrapped up their non-conference schedule Saturday as they split a doubleheader with George Fox University taking game one 6-5 before falling 7-5 in the second.
Whittier has won one out of their last six as they drop to 7-20, 3-9 SCIAC.
Game 1 (W, 6-5)
The tight games continued in the first game of the doubleheader. Whittier was forced to play catch-up as they saw themselves trailing 3-0 and then 4-0 after the 6th. But the Purple & Gold didn't go away quietly as Jake Raynaud (Los Gatos, Calif.) drove in the first comeback run with a sacrifice fly to left in the 7th.
This led to the largest comeback of the season, which happened in the 9th where the Poets put together five runs on three hits. With two outs and nobody on, Whittier saw themselves in a hole but saw their rally sparked by Hank Burditt (Granada Hills, Calif.) drawing a base on balls followed by a Nick Krska (Happy Valley, OR) single to center. Both then moved up on a wild pitch before Brandon Mulrooney (Placentia, Calif.) drew a walk that loaded the bases.
After a pitching change by the Bruins, Andrew Lamar (Alta Loma, Calif.) singled through the left side that scored a couple that cut the deficit to one and Raynaud capped it off with a three run shot to left that brought in the eventual game winning runs.
Jack Silva (Katy, TX) came in relief in the 9th and despite giving up a run was able to quiet the George Fox bats as Whittier came away with the win.
Raynaud led the offense going 2-3 with a run scored and four RBI's. Lamar was 2-5 scoring once and driving in two, while Mulrooney was 2-4 scoring once.
Tim Turpen (Chino Hills, Calif.) got the win going an 1.0 as he picks up his first win on the season. Alex Baez (Chino Hills, Calif.) again continues to search for that first win as he got the start going 4.0 innings giving up three runs on five hits. Silva grabbed his third save on the season.
Game 2 (L, 7-5)
The second game proved tight as well as Whittier saw themselves playing catch-up again. They trailed 2-0 but came back to tie things up in the 4th as Tanner Marcoe (Northridge, Calif.) would single to right plating Lamar and Matthew Macey (Oceanside, Calif.) coming across on a wild pitch.
The Bruins went back in front in the bottom half of the inning as they brought across two themselves and they would stay in front for the rest of the game despite giving up another three runs over the next four innings.
In the 6th, Steven Castro (Long Beach, Calif.) flied out to left field that scored Raynaud and then in the 9thLamar would single to right center that scored another two. Bu the rally would end there as Raynaud would ground out.
Mulrooney finished 2-5 for the game. Lamar was 1-4 scoring once along with two RBI's, while Raynaud was 1-5 scoring once and Marcoe 1-4 with an RBI.
Justin Ushio (Mililani, HI) picked up the loss going 5.2 innings giving up seven runs on eight hits.
Whittier returns to their Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) schedule this weekend as they open a three game series with Cal Lutheran University. They begin this Friday, April 7 as they host CLU beginning at 3:00pm.
