WHITTIER, Calif. – The long ball hurt the Whittier College Baseball team Friday afternoon at Memorial Stadium as they fell 5-4 to Claremont-M-S.

The Stags cashed in a lead-off double in the 1st to go in front but the Purple & Gold would answer right back in their opening at –bats.  Andrew Lamar (Alta Loma, Calif.) singled up the middle before stealing second.  Hank Burditt (Granada Hills, Calif.) then hit a shot off the first baseman's glove that put runners on the corners and Matthew Macey (Oceanside, Calif.) would drive in the tying run with a sacrifice fly to center.

CMS found the lead back in the 4th with Opperman going deep to left with a solo shot but again the Poets would respond in the bottom half with Jake Raynaud (Los Gatos, Calif.) hitting a sacrifice fly to left that plated Macey, who reached earlier on a single through the 6-5 hole.

But the very next inning, Opperman would connect again this time to left center that brought in a couple moving the score to 5-2.

Trailing by three heading into the 8th, the Poets would rally bringing across a couple on three hits and capitalizing on a Stag error.

Dmitri Washington (Peoria, AZ) led off the inning with a single up the middle and advanced to second on an error by the pitcher.  Brandon Mulrooney (Placentia, Calif.) would connect with a single up the middle that score Washington and he would eventually come around to score as well thanks to a Raynaud walk.

But the rally would end as Tanner Marcoe (Northridge, Calif.) would groundout that allowed CMS to hold on for the one run victory.

The loss went to Dante Mancia (La Mirada, Calif.) who went 5.0 innings giving up all five runs on six hits.  He drops to 1-5.  Burditt led the offense going 3-4, while Macey was 2-2 with a run scored and an RBI.  Raynaud was 1-2 driving in a couple and Lamar was 1-4 scoring twice.

Whittier wraps up their three-game series with the Stags tomorrow, Saturday, April 22 on the road with game times set for 11:00am and 2:00pm.
