WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Baseball team got their 2018 season underway Friday afternoon as they pushed past Whitman College 5-1 at Hugh B. Mendez Stadium.

The Purple & Gold put together a stellar performance on Adam Elberg field holding the Blues to just six hits.  Royce Komesu (Kailua, HI) got the start and picked up the win going 4.0 shutout innings not giving up a hit.

Whittier went on top in the first inning and rolled from there thanks to Matthew Macey (Oceanside, Calif.) who hit a solo bomb to deep left that put WC on top 1-0.  Brandon Mulrooney (Placentia, Calif.) eventually came around to score soon after singling through the right side and advancing on a wild pitch before getting plated by Mike Hernandez (Stockton, Calif.) who doubled through the left side.

In the 5th, the Poets stretched their lead to 4-0 bringing across another two runs.  Dmitri Washington (Peoria, AZ) led off the rally with a single through the left side and then moved up following an error by the shortstop, which put Daniel Tuerffs (Yorba Linda, Calif.) on first.  After a pitching change, Andrew Lamar (Alta Loma, Calif.) was able to load the bases after getting hit by a pitch and Mulrooney would then step in and drive in two with a double up the middle.

Mulrooney came up clutch again in the 8th singling through the right side that scored Macey, who reached on a double through the right side in his at bat before.  The Blues put together a rally in the 9th scoring one and getting runners on the corners but Macey was able to come in and shut the door picking up the save helping the Poets come away with the win.

Mulrooney had a game finishing 3-4 with a run scored and three runs batted in.  Macey was 2-4 with two runs scored and an RBI and Hernandez and Washington each picked up a hit apiece.

Whittier has a short break as they return to the diamond tomorrow, Saturday, February 3 as they host Willamette in a doubleheader with first pitches slated for 11am and 2:30pm.
