OCCIDENTAL, Calif. – The Whittier College Baseball team was unable to come away with a win during a doubleheader with Occidental Saturday falling 3-2 and 6-1.

The Purple & Gold drop the series to the Tigers and move to 3-7, 2-4 SCIAC, while dropping five straight.

Game 1 (L, 3-2)

Whittier held a 1-0 lead, which carried through six innings of play.  This run came in the top half of the 1st with Mason Blansett (Lodi, Calif.) singling to left field, driving in Daniel Tuerffs (Yorba Linda, Calif.) who started things off with a double to left.

The Poets extended their lead to 2-0 in the top half of the 7th capitalizing on a throwing error by the pitcher.  This allowed Alexander Jelloian (Chatsworth, Calif.) to score who led off the inning getting hit by a pitch.  Dane Goodman (Ross, Calif.) reached on the error and was able to move up to second with a stolen base before moving to third on the throw.  He then attempted to score on an ensuing wild pitch but was cut down at the plate, catcher to the pitcher.

Tim Turpen (Chino Hills, Calif.) who earned the start threw tough holding the Tigers scoreless over the first six innings but got into trouble in the bottom half of the 7th giving up two runs on three hits.  Smith and Fredricks started the inning off with a single and a double.  Turpen was able to sit down McNeil before getting relieved by Justin Kottinger (Stockton, Calif.).  Kottinger gave up a pinch hit single but was able to get the second strikeout of the inning before getting subbed out for Andrew Chavez (West Covina, Calif.).   Chavez though couldn't limit the damage giving up a walk and hitting a batter.

Then in the 9th, Oxy was able to pick up the winning run.  With runners on first and second and one out, Smith singled to center that scored the runner from second giving Oxy the come from behind victory.

Chavez was charged with the loss throwing 1.0 inning giving up two hits and two walks.  Tuerffs finished the game 1-for-4 with a run scored.  Blansett was 1-for-4 with an RBI and Jacob Bauer (Pleasanton, Calif.), Kellen Ward (Montgomery, AL), and Jarryd Samsing (Buckeye, AZ) each recorded hits.

Game 2 (L, 6-1)

Despite collecting eight hits in game two the Poets still couldn't get enough runs across to pull off the win.  They fell behind 1-0 after the 3rd but managed to tie things up in 6th with Brandon Mulrooney (Placentia, Calif.) singling down the right field line that plated Nick Krska (Happy Valley, OR).

But in the 8th, Oxy pulled away for good with a five spot, which included a three-run blast from Zorn.

Dante Mancia (La Mirada, Calif.) was charged with the loss, his third on the season as he went 1.0 inning giving up five runs on five hits.  Krska had a multi-hit game going 2-for-4 with a run scored and was joined by Jelloian who was also 2-for-4.  Mulrooney was 1-for-4 with an RBI and Blansett and Ward each recorded a hit.

Whittier returns to the diamond this Friday, March 15 when they host Bowdoin for a single game beginning at 3:00pm.
