WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Baseball team saw their bats come alive Friday afternoon in a 10-3 win over Bowdoin College.

The Purple & Gold totaled 10 runs on 13 hits en route to snapping their five-game losing skid, while improving to 4-7, 2-4 SCIAC.

Whittier got an early run in the bottom half of the 1stDaniel Tuerffs (Yorba Linda, Calif.) reached on a fielder's choice to start things off and then came around to score following a Nick Krska (Happy Valley, OR) double to left center.  In the 3rd, the Poets added to their lead with a three spot coming on three hits and an error.  Brandon Mulrooney (Placentia, Calif.) reached first following an error by the shortstop before being moved up into scoring position following a sacrifice bunt from Tuerffs.  Krska then singled through the left side moving runners to the corners and then stole second putting two runners in scoring position.

After a Mason Blansett (Lodi, Calif.) groundout, putting two outs on the board Jacob Bauer (Pleasanton, Calif.) drove in both runners with a single through the right side and then came around to score following a double down the left field line by Alexander Jelloian (Chatsworth, Calif.).

In the 6th, Whittier tacked on another run again capitalizing on a Polar Bear error by the third baseman allowing Krska to score.  Bowdoin got two back in the 7th and had a chance to do some more damage getting after Poet starter Alex Baez (Chino Hills, Calif.), who left with the bases loaded and two outs.  Freshman Alex Escobar (Brea, Calif.) came in relief and picked up a huge strikeout ending the threat.

In the bottom half of the 7th, the Poets added insurance with a five-spot.  Bauer led off the frame with a first pitch solo shot to deep left.  Jelloian followed with a base hit to left center and Tanner Barnes (Littleton, CO) moved him up to second with a bunt single.  Following a pop-up on the infield, Dane Goodman (Ross, Calif.) singled through the left side bringing in one before stealing second, right in front of a Tuerffs double to left that plated another.

Krska then stepped in and drew a walk and Blansett ended the scoring with a single up the middle.  In the 9th, the Polar Bears attempted to comeback bringing across one but it would be too late as Whittier would hold on for the seven run victory.

Baez picked up the win going 6.2 Innings giving up two unearned runs on five hits.  He also added three strikeouts.  He moves to 3-2.  On offense Mulrooney was 2-for-4 with a run scored.  Krska was 2-for-3 scoring once and driving in another and Tuerffs was 1-for-4 with three runs scored and a run batted in.  Bauer had a big day going 2-for-4 scoring twice and driving in three and Jelloian finished 2-for-4 with a run and RBI.

Whittier has a short turn around as they host the University of Puget Sound, today, Saturday, March 16 for a doubleheader.  First pitches set for 11:00am and 2:30pm.
