SALEM, Ore. – The Whittier College Baseball team picked up their first win during their Spring Break trip to the Pacific Northwest Thursday edging Willamette University 8-6.
The Purple & Gold were supposed to have a three game series with the Bearcats earlier in the year but due to inclement weather were unable to complete it. The game yesterday was a make-up for one of those two games. Whittier improves now to 7-8, 2-4 SCIAC.
Whittier gave up three homeruns to the Bearcats but were able to gather eight runs on 10 hits to pull off the win. The Poets scored two runs in the top of the 7th that broke a 4-4 tie and they were able to add two in the 8th that secured the victory.
Willamette struck in the bottom half of the 1st with Janitz singling to right field. WC went on top for the first time the very next inning as Alexander Jelloian (Chatsworth, Calif.) porched a two-run shot to left. In the third the Poets scrapped for another run. Brandon Mulrooney (Placentia, Calif.) and Daniel Tuerffs (Yorba Linda, Calif.) went back to back with base hits. Nick Krska (Happy Valley, OR) and Mason Blansett (Lodi, Calif.) both added fielder's choices and Jacob Bauer (Pleasanton, Calif.) drove in the lone run with an infield groundout.
In the 4th, Whittier capitalized on a Bearcat error to add insurance. With two outs the Poets were able to get a base hit from Mulrooney up the middle who then advanced to second on a wild pitch. After a Tuerffs walk Krska then stepped in with the bases loaded and drew an RBI base on balls.
Willamette got two back in the bottom half of the inning with a solo shot and a sacrifice fly and then tied things up in the 6th using a WC fielding error. But that's as close as they would get as Whittier would add two in the 7th and 8th. They used a hit and an error to bring across the go ahead runs in the 7th and then Bauer stepped up in the 8th with a two-run single up the middle plating Krska and Mulrooney.
Jack Silva (Katy, TX) got the start and went 3.2 innings giving up three runs on four hits. Alex Escobar (Brea, Calif.) came in relief and picked up the win going 2.1 innings giving up no earned runs on two hits with three strikeouts. Justin Kottinger (Stockton, Calif.) threw the final two innings scoreless giving up just two hits as he collected his first save.
Mulrooney led the offense going 3-for-6 scoring once. Jelloian was 2-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI's and Bauer was 1-for-4 with a run scored and three runs batted in.
Whittier returns to action today, March 22 when they take on Pacific University for a doubleheader. Game times set for 3:00pm and 6:00pm.
