WHITTIER, Calif. – Senior Alex Baez (Chino Hills, Calif.) returned to the mound one last time Friday afternoon following a layoff of almost a month due to an elbow injury and what a game he threw, shutting out Cal Lutheran University 2-0.
The Purple & Gold aren't rolling over to end the season despite being knocked out of the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Post Season Tournament. They improve now to 20-18, 10-12 SCIAC and have won two of their last three and have now beaten CLU twice now on the season.
Baez threw a gem going 6.0 Innings scoreless, while giving up just one hit. He picked up the win and finishes 2019 at 5-3. He was relieved by Dante Mancia (La Mirada, Calif.) who threw the final 3.0 Innings also scoreless as he too gave up just one run en route to his first save of the season.
Whittier broke the scoreless tie in the 5th. Brandon Mulrooney (Placentia, Calif.) got the rally started with a single up the middle and moved over to third following a double by Daniel Tuerffs (Yorba Linda, Calif.) down the left field line. The very next batter Nick Krska (Happy Valley, OR) drove a deep fly ball to left that plated the eventual game-winning run.
In the 8th, Whittier added insurance off the bat of Alexander Jelloian (Chatsworth, Calif.) who hit a solo shot to deep left field that moved the deficit to two.
Whittier collected 12 hits on the day led by Jelloian who was 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Mulrooney was also 3-for-4 scoring once. Jacob Bauer (Pleasanton, Calif.) finished 2-for-4 and Krska and John Vuz (Blairstown, NJ) were each 1-for-3.
Whittier wraps up their 2019 season tomorrow, Saturday, May 4 when they travel to Thousand Oaks, Calif. to take on Cal Lutheran University beginning at 11:00am and 2:30pm.
