WHITTIER, Calif. – The offense was held in check Saturday night as the Whittier College Football team fell 42-7 at the hands of the University of Redlands.

The Purple & Gold were held scoreless three of the four quarters as they totaled a mere 210 yards of total offense with 184 coming in the air and another 26 on the ground.

Whittier got things going on their opening possession using a roughing the kicker penalty and a forced fumble by Arnie Robles (Pico Rivera, Calif.) on a punt by Cooper Allen (Visalia, Calif.) that set the Poets up on the Redlands 36.  But the very next play after the turnover, freshman Daniel Garlick (Lodi, Calif.) would get picked off by Chad Virgil ending the threat.

The Bulldogs would then take it 65-yards in nine plays to add the first score of the game with Levi Plante finding Steve Van Grouw back corner of the endzone.  UR strung together another long drive to end the first quarter as Plante orchestrated a 14-play, 75-yard series that ended with him running it in from six yards out moving the score to 14-0.

In the second period, Redlands added to their lead scoring three times with Plante finding Connor Kennedy twice and then back-up QB Nathan Martinez finding Van Grouw from 18-yards out making the score 35-0 at the half.

Martinez came out in the third quarter and added another touchdown this time connecting with Jacob Huff for a five-yard score.  Whittier finally put points on the board late in the frame as Garlick put together a 9-play, 81-yard drive capped off with a 44-yard crossing route from Moises Gonzalez (Long Beach, Calif.) who would take it up the near sideline for a touchdown.

But these would be the final points put up by either team as the final 15:00 minutes would end up being played scoreless.

Garlick was 21-for-37 for 184 yards and a touchdown.  Alex Retana (Whittier, Calif.) led the backfield with six rushes for 36 yards averaging six yards a carry and Gonzalez led the receiving core with six catches for 90 yards and a score averaging 15 yards per catch.

On defense, Thomas Mendrin (La Habra, Calif.) totaled 10 tackles (7 solo/3 assisted) with a tackle for a loss and a pass break-up.  Nicholas Markarian (Chino Hills, Calif.) added nine tackles with a tackle for a loss and a forced fumble and Marquise Ogletree (Pasadena, Calif.) finished with five tackles and two pass break-ups.  Up front, Meda Mazon (Riverside, Calif.) and Hussayn Abdul-Qawi (Fontana, Calif.) combined for a sack, a tackle for a loss and six tackles.

Whittier (1-7, 1-5 SCIAC) has their final game of 2018 this Saturday, November 10 as they take on Cal Lutheran University beginning at 1:00pm at Memorial Stadium for Senior Day.
