WHITTIER, Calif. – For the second time this season the Whittier College Men's Basketball team has rolled the University of La Verne as they made quick work of the Leopards during PAC the GAC 95-67.
The Purple & Gold are on a roll winning four straight and have scored at least 90 points over their last three games, while improving to 9-12, 7-5 SCIAC.
16 players saw the court with 15 of them collecting points. Louis Kurihara (Culver City, Calif.) led the offense once again with 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting, while Ryan Henry (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) chipped in with 10 and five boards.
Journey Shank (Burbank, Calif.) and Nick Potthoff (Phoenix, AZ) added sparks off the bench each recording nine points apiece and Jacob Aruta (Stockton, Calif.) shot 50% from the field for eight points in 12 minutes of action.
La Verne held an early lead at 7-6 but that didn't last as the next ten points came from the Purple & Gold moving the score to 16-7. Potthoff knocked down a three-pointer that moved the margin to double digits and it got worse after that as WC put together a 13-1 run late that gave them a 22-pont lead.
Nine points by ULV over the final 2:00 cut into the Poet lead but they still trailed 48-29 at the break. In the second half, the bench earned quality minutes for WC. La Verne found some offense with 38 points but the depth of Whittier was too much as they would go on to add another 47 points over the final 20:00 minutes, which included grabbing a lead as many as 30 at the 6:39 mark.
Whittier finished the game shooting 49% from the field and 30% from behind the three-point line. They were at a 73% clip from the free throw line, outrebounded the Leopards 40-31, added 20 points off turnovers, and won the battle in the paint 34-18.
Whittier returns to action tomorrow night, Wednesday, February 7 when they travel to Chapman University to take on the Panthers beginning at 7:00pm.
