WHITTIER, Calif. – For the second time in three weeks, senior guard Louis Kurihara (Culver City, Calif.) was named the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Athlete of the Week announced by the conference office.
He is the second Poet this season to earn this recognition as Eric Davis (Ventura, Calif.) earned accolades back on December 11.
Kurihara helped lead the Whittier College Men's Basketball team to a 1-1 week that saw the Poets fall to Chapman, 77-74 before earning a thrilling, 74-73 victory over Occidental. Against the Tigers, Kurihara swished a step-back jumper with 2.9 seconds left to tie the game, and then converted the ensuing free throw after being fouled to lift the Poets to the win. The senior guard finished with 20 points in the win over Occidental going 7-for-14 from the floor, 3-for-6 from three-point range and, 3-for-3 from the free throw line. For the week he averaged 18.0 points per game.
Whittier returns to the court tomorrow, February 14 when they host Claremont-M-S beginning at 7:00pm with playoff implications on the line.
