Poets fall 90-76 to Whitworth at Bruin Classic

NEWBURG, Ore. – The Whittier College Men's Basketball team ended the Bruin Classic Saturday falling to Whitworth University 90-76.

Whittier has started off the season 0-2 dropping both contests during the Bruin Classic.

The Purple & Gold provided a tight game in the first half shooting 43% from the field and Kenyatta Louder (Compton, Calif.) going off for 11 points and five boards.  Whittier trailed 24-20 midway through and then saw the Pirates string together eight in a row to help give them a 47-31 advantage at the break.

Out of intermission, the Poets made a late charge with a 10-2 run thanks to back to back triples from Ryan Mendez (Whittier, Calif.) and Louder cutting the deficit to six at 76-70.  But that's as close as WC would get as Ben College for Whitworth would convert a three point play the old fashion play along with a triple from downtown that stretched the lead back to double digits.  After that the Pirates tacked on another two three-pointers that put the game out of reach with under 3:00 minutes to play. 

Nick Potthoff (Phoenix, AZ) finished with 21 points going 8-for-14 from the field along with four rebounds.  Louder added a double double with 19 points and 11 rebounds and Journey Shank (Burbank, Calif.) ran the point dishing out five assists and adding 13 points.

Whittier finished shooting 49% for the game was at a 40% clip from behind the arc.  They lost the battle inside however losing the rebounding effort 44-32 and points in the paint 34-28.     

Whittier returns to the court this week after Thanksgiving when they host the Holiday Inn La Mirada Purple & Gold Poet Classic on November 23-24.  They open with Rhodes on Friday before taking on Puget Sound on Saturday.  Both games set to tip-off at 3:00pm.
