CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Golf team got their 2019 season underway Friday, hosting the Poet Challenge at Industry Hills Golf Course.
The Purple & Gold managed to finish 4th out of five teams with a score of 327, edging Vanguard University by two strokes. The University of La Verne won the team award shooting a 312 and was able to beat out Chapman University by one (313). Pomona-Pitzer was the other SCIAC school in the Challenge and they posted a 322, which placed them 3rd.
Freshman Justin McGrath (Cardiff by the Sea, Calif.)) led the Poets with a 79 that put him a tie for 8th. Martin Bedino (Neuquen, Argentina) was the second Poet finisher posting an 81, which put him in a tie for 14th and freshman Roman Aragon (La Palma, Calif.) followed with an 83. Freshman transfer Ryan Turnbull-Ward (Perth, West Australia) found his way into the starting lineup and finished with an 84, which put him 23rd giving WC their fourth score and Tiger Fawaz (San Bernardino, Calif.) and Nicholas Bernal (Huntington Park, Calif.) wrapped up the starting unit going 33rd (94) and 34th (95) respectively.
Junior transfer Vincent Brunet (Ottawa, Canada) did not meet qualifying marks for the tournament and was forced to play as an individual but still came away with a big 81 that put him a tie for 14th. The other individual for the Poets was Ethan Wookey (Los Gatos, Calif.) who went 93 for 32nd.
Whittier gets ready this week for their first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) match-up, which will be SCIAC No. 1 next weekend, February 23-24 at Los Serranos Golf Club.
