CHINO HILLS, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Golf team finished the first Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) tournament finishing in 8th place at 49-over-par with 625 strokes (315-310).
The SCIAC Championships consist of seven rounds of golf. SCIAC No. 1 was played Saturday and Sunday at Los Serranos Golf Club. The next two rounds of the SCIAC Championships will be played on April 6-7 at Pacific Palms Golf Course in the City of Industry with the final three rounds on April 18-20 at Brookside Golf Club.
Freshman Justin McGrath (Cardiff by the Sea, Calif.) led the Purple & Gold posting two sub-80 rounds with a 78-76. He finished in a tie for 28th. Fellow first years Roman Aragon (La Palma, Calif.) and Brandon Folke (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) and junior transfer Vincent Brunet (Ottawa, Canada) all came in tied for 33rd. Aragon went 80-77, moving up six spots after day one and Folke did the same, posting an 81-76 bumping up nine spots to boast the largest jump over the two days. Brunet had a 76-81 dropping nine spots.
Martin Bedino (Neuquen, Argentina) was the last Poet to score with a two day total of 163 (81-82). He finished 45th.
The University of Redlands won the team event with a 575 (288-287) and was followed by La Verne with a 580 (293-287), Claremont-M-S at 588 (296-292), Occidental College (306-294), Chapman University (309-294), Cal Lutheran (298-306), and Pomona-Pitzer (305-305).
Redlands Jake Hollander (70-72-142) and Cameron Cooper (71-71-142) and La Verne's Pitiluk Phanomchai (75-67-142) are all tied for the lead at 2-under-par.
Whittier returns to the links this next week, March 3-5 when they take part in the Las Vegas Desert Classic at Royal Links Golf Club.
