GEORGETOWN, TX – The men's lacrosse team opened up their 2012 campaign in impressive fashion as they put on a dominating performance cruising to a 14-2 victory over Southwestern University.

Whittier who is coming off of a 4-7 record in 2011, which included four losses that came by a one game differential put this contest against Southwestern out of reach early making a strong statement that they are ready for the season.

The Poets improve to 1-0, while the Pirates drop to 0-3.

The Purple & Gold opened the scoring with five goals in the first quarter from five different players including Jake Hawkridge, Tommy Andrews, Mike Neumayr, Hunter Hall, and Kevin Looney

But they didn't stop there as Hall added a goal early in the second behind a man up situation followed by goals from Neumayr and Daniel McQuade before the Pirates got on the scoreboard with a man up goal from Jamie Long that cut the lead to seven going into the break.

Coming out of the break, the defensive intensity stepped up as only two goals were scored in the frame both coming from Foster Cunningham and Sam Russell of the Poets.

This pushed the Purple & Gold to a 10-1 lead heading into the final frame.  The Pirates answered early in the fourth with a goal from Nathan Blake three minutes in, but from there the Poets rattled off four unanswered from Andrews, Hall, Looney, and Russell that put the game out of reach helping the Poets secure their first win of the season.

Sophomore Hall led the Poets with four goals on nine shots, while collecting two assists and two groundballs, while senior Russell finished with one goal on eight shots and four assists to go with five groundballs.

Whittier returns to action today as they complete their trip to Texas with a game against Trine University with the game time set to begin at 1pm.
