WHITTIER, Calif. - Head Coach Nick Marks has announced the Poet's schedule for the upcoming 2018 men's lacrosse season. The exciting sixteen game slate will be the 39th season for the Poets and includes contests in California, Illinois, Colorado, and Texas. The Poets schedule will include four games against opponents that competed in the 2017 NCAA Division III men's lacrosse tournament, six home games in Memorial Stadium, and the annual Locker-Stabler Cup against western NCAA rival Colorado College.
Whittier will host San Diego State (6-8) of the MCLA for an exhibition game on February 3rd at home. The following weekend the program will hold its annual Alumni Weekend to kick off the 2018 season. On February 17th, the Poets will open on the road in the Bay Area against the Westminster Griffins (9-7). Westminster competes in the RMAC of NCAA Division II and has finished in the conference championship the past two seasons. The Griffins will look to avenge an 11-9 loss to the Poets at Whittier last season. On February 18th, the Poets will square off against another NCAA Division II opponent in Notre Dame De Namur (5-10) who the Poets bested last season 12-5.
On February 23rd, the team will travel to Dallas where they will face the Hendrix Warriors (8-8) of the Southern Athletic Association. This past season the Warriors set a program record for wins in a season with 8 before falling to Birmingham-Southern (8-9) in the SAA semifinals, who the Poets will match up with at Southwestern University outside Austin, TX. The final game of the Texas trip on February 25th, will be against the Southwestern Pirates, also a western NCAA Division III Independent. The Poets defeated the Pirates in both games last season. The Pirates and Poets will play again on March 15th at Whittier College in Memorial Stadium.
The Poets will open their home game stretch on March 8th in Memorial Stadium when they host the Oneonta Red Dragons of the SUNYAC (3-11). On March 11th, the Eastern Connecticut Warriors (8-10) will come to Whittier for a Sunday match up. The Warriors finished 8-10 last season after losing in the Little East Conference semifinals. The following week Whittier will play its last home game of March when they host Elmhurst College (8-9) of the CCIW for a Thursday night game. Last season Elmhurst fell to eventual CCIW champion IWU in the conference semifinals. Last season Whittier defeated the Blue Jays 11-6 in Memorial Stadium.
On March 31st, the Poets will travel to fellow SCIAC member Chapman (13-7) in Orange County who competes in the MCLA. The following Saturday April 7th will be Senior Day when fellow NCAA Division III Independent rival Colorado College comes to town, who advanced to last year's NCAA tournament. The next week will be match ups in the Midwest against Illinois Wesleyan (16-4) of the CCIW and Aurora (18-3) of the MLC. Both IWU and Aurora advanced to last season's NCAA tournament after winning their conference championships.
April will finish with the annual Locker-Stabler Cup which will be at Colorado College (10-6) on April 28th. The Locker-Stabler Cup was instituted to honor the school's past coaches who helped bring NCAA Division III lacrosse to the West Region of the United States. Last year the Poets defeated Colorado College 17-12 for their first Locker-Stabler Cup. The regular season will conclude on April 29th at Johnson & Wales in Denver. JWU will compete as a NCAA team starting in the 2019 season.
