GRANVILLE, OH – The Whittier College Men's Lacrosse team ended their 2019 regular-season schedule over the weekend falling 12-5 to No. 13 Denison University.
The Purple & Gold end their trip out to the midwest 0-2 and wrap up their regular season 13-3, which is the best regular season finish in school history.
Whittier and Denison were squaring off for the fourth time and the first since 2006 on Saturday and the Poets gave the Big Red all they could handle early taking a 3-2 lead into the second quarter. Nick Brisbee (Lake Oswego, OR) started off the scoring and was joined by Ronan Dooney (Portland, OR) who added the next two to end the period.
But this would be the most offense generated by Whittier for the game as they would add two goals over the next three quarters. Their fourth goal came in the second quarter from Billy Shaffer (Tucson, AZ) with under a minute to play and their final tally came in the 4th from Dooney.
Whittier was outshot 46-25, grabbed 35 groundballs and was 21-for-24 on clear attempts. They were 0-for-3 on man-up situations and were a mere 5-for-21 on faceoffs.
Dakota Turgeon (Bellingham, WA) played all 60:00 minutes and finished with 14 saves against 26 shots. He also added four groundballs. Dooney led the offense finishing with three goals along with six pick-ups and Cooper Champagne (La Mesa, Calif.) and Jacob Berggren (Tualatin, OR) each registered an assist.
On defense Whittier finished with nine caused turnovers as Shaffer, Max Lepley (San Clemente, Calif.), Riley Filler (Manhattan Beach, Calif.), and Ryan Crawford (San Clemente, Calif.) each added two apiece.
Whittier now waits to see if they earn a bid into the NCAA Division III National Championships.
