REDLANDS, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Soccer team tested the No. 13 ranked Bulldogs of the University of Redlands in the first half of Wednesday night's contest but couldn't hold it in the second half as they fell 4-1 at Farquhar Field.
In the 9th minute UR was able to grab the early lead as Casey ChubbFertal chipped a nice ball over the defenders for Sergio Valencia to head in. Whittier achieved three corner kicks over the next 10 minutes looking for the equalizer but it wouldn't come as the defensive unit for the Bulldogs were there to minimize the threats.
In the 30th minute, ChubbFertal again placed a nice ball in the box with a high-throw in, but this time it found the head of Joey Kenney, which moved the score to 2-0.
The Purple & Gold though didn't go away quietly as they pulled within one at the 39:16 mark as Connor Tait-Mole (Livermore, Calif.) buried a penalty kick following a foul in the box.
But that would be the last offense gathered by WC as UR went on to add two more connections in the second half en route to the three-goal victory. The Poets had hope coming over the final 20:00 as Cameron Doody was called for a Red Card forcing the Bulldogs to play a man-down the rest of the game. But the Poets couldn't capitalize as the UR defensive unit stepped up big.
The Poets tested UR keeper John Melito over 80 minutes forcing him to come up with five unbelievable saves, while John Haskill would come in late to pull off another three as the Poets continued to pepper the cage.
Whittier was outshot on the game 15-14 but held the advantage 7-6 on corner kicks.
Nathan Armas (Montclair, Calif.) got the start in goal and played all 90:00 finishing with five saves. Tait-Mole led the offense with six shots, with four being on frame, while Alejandro Trujillo (Buena Park, Calif.) would add another three.
Whittier remains on the road this Saturday, October 21 as they take on Claremont-M-S beginning at 7:00pm.
