WHITTIER, Calif. – For the second straight game the Whittier College Men's soccer Team has put up at least four goals in a victory.
Saturday night the Poets rolled the University of La Verne 4-1 inside Memorial Stadium and have now combined to outscore their last two opponents 9-2 as they improve to 3-3, 2-2 SCIAC. La Verne who was coming off an overtime win over Cal Lutheran (2-1) drops to 3-3, 1-3 SCIAC.
The Purple & Gold wasted little time getting on the scoreboard with freshman Johan Telkamp (Seattle, WA) carrying the ball to the end line and putting in a cross from the right flank in the 7th minute. The ball he put in was gathered by Matteo Loi (Kirkland, WA) in front of the goal who volleyed it past the keeper near post.
Eight minutes later WC added to their lead this time capitalizing off of a ULV defensive miscue. A Poet mid put in a long ball trying to find Jacob Conlon (Placentia, Calif.) far side but the defensive back intercepted it and attempted to head to back to his goalie. But the ensuing pass wasn't deep enough allowing freshman Telkamp to hustle to it and flick it past ULV keeper Rene Gonzalez.
Out of the break Whittier continued to keep the offense going providing insurance in the 53rd minute from Nicolas Barrera (Buffalo, Calif.). Conlon received a pass from the midfield near side and put in a through ball to Barrera who carried it to the end line before putting a shot on goal. His attack would deflect off a Leo defender and off the far post and in putting WC on top 3-0.
But the Purple & Gold weren't done as they were able to tack on another, three minutes later with Telkamp putting away his second goal on the game and what a finish it was. Conlon carried the ball up the near sideline and made a move inside past a defender before putting in a cross back post where Telkamp laid out finishing with a header.
La Verne was able to get on the scoreboard late with three minutes to play from Darious Adbollahi coming on a free kick outside the 18. But the damage had been done as Whittier cruised to the victory.
Teddy Nickerson (Seattle, WA) picked up the win in goal finishing with a shutout over 81 minutes of action along with four saves. Telkamp led the offense with two goals and an assist coming on three shots. Loi added three shots and freshmen Hayden Barnouw (Seattle, WA) and Nathaniel Santana (Santa Fe Springs, Calif.) each registered two.
Whittier outshot La Verne 15-11 and held the advantage on corner kicks 7-4.
Whittier travels this Wednesday, September 19 when they go take on Claremont-M-S- beginning at 7:00pm.
