WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Soccer team used a late goal to top Pomona-Pitzer on the road Saturday as they came away with the 2-1 victory.
The Purple & Gold have won three of their last four and have outscored those opponents a combined 11-3. Whittier improves back to .500 at 4-4, 3-3 SCIAC, while Pomona-Pitzer drops to 3-6, 2-3 SCIAC.
All three goals of the game came in the second half and within a 24:00 minute period. Whittier opened up the scoring in the 63rd minute capitalizing on a Sagehen turnover, which led to a two-on-one chance where RayRay Roberson (Albuquerque, NM) fed Matteo Loi (Kirkland, WA) for the go-ahead connection.
But that lead was short-lived as PP stormed back with the equalizer in the 71st minute as Aidan Ferrer broke loose behind the Poets' defensive line before setting up Bjorn Sigurdsson for a tap-in goal.
Then with four minutes to play, the Poets would find the game-winner this time from Jacob Conlon (Placentia, Calif.) who took the ball down the left side of the field before sneaking a shot under Sagehen keeper Jonathan Rushton putting WC on top 2-1.
Pomona-Pitzer had one final look to tie things up for the second time on a free kick that was played into the box but the Poets were able to clear the ball to hang on for the victory.
Whittier held the advantage on shots at 11-9, while gathering five corner kicks. Freshman Teddy Nickerson (Seattle, WA) picked up the win between the posts finishing with five saves.
Conlon led the offense with three shots and Alejandro Trujillo (Buena Park, Calif.) would add two.
Whittier returns home for a match-up with Cal Lutheran this Wednesday, September 26 beginning at 7:00pm.
