WHITTIER, Calif. – Following the resignation of former Director of Tennis Quinn Caldaron, Executive Director of Athletics Robert Coleman announced the promotion of Kristin Yep to oversee the Whittier College Tennis program.
Yep will now oversee the day to day operations of both programs, including the budgeting, fundraising, and recruiting, while coaching the women's team. She has also hired JR Sarmiento who will now become the new Head Men's Tennis Coach.
Yep is a graduate of Concordia University '12, where she earned a B.A. in Exercise Sports Science with an emphasis in Rehabilitation. She was also an All-American for the Eagles in both singles and doubles.
She is currently a certified professional tennis teaching instructor and is a member of the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA). She is no stranger to Whittier College as she joined former Director of Tennis Ben Belletto as his assistant coach on the men's side back in 2015. Prior to attending Concordia (CA) she was a traveling junior player for eight years going worldwide playing on the International Tennis Federation Circuit (ITF) earning a world ranking as high as 720.
JR Sarmiento joins the Poet staff after serving as an assistant women's tennis coach at Cal State Fullerton last season. There the team finished 19-4, which was the best winning record in program history.
Sarmiento played at UCLA his freshman year in 2009. Prior to attending UCLA, he was a four-year letter winner at Carson High School where he won the CIF Singles Title in 2007.
His notable accomplishments include being a 5-star recruit, earning a ranking of No. 22 in the Southern California Boy's 18 & Under Division, becoming nationally ranked No. 1 in singles within the Boys 12's and Boys 14's divisions, and also earning a ranking of No. 2 in the Philippines in the mixed singles 10 & under division.
