VENTURA, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Tennis Team sent three players to the Ojai Championships over the weekend and what a strong two days they had wrapping up their 2018 season.
Senior Agustin Lombardi (Argentina) led the Purple & Gold winning the Ojai Championships singles back draw. He started off the Championships with a tough match-up against Yahn Gawrit (Cal Lutheran) ultimately falling 6-1, 6-4 in the main draw.
But after that he would move into consolation where he would earn a withdrawal from Chapman No. 1 Jacob Lee before taking out Kevin Yu (Caltech) 7-5, 6-4 and teammate Elmer Van Butselaar (Netherlands) (Whittier College) 6-4, 6-4 making his way into the consolation final. There he was supposed to faceoff against Ryan Dugan (UC Santa Cruz) but he would withdrawal due to injury giving Lombardi the consolation title.
Van Butselaar found himself in a similar situation as Lombardi falling in the first round of the main draw to William Leach (George Fox) 6-2, 6-2. He too would move into consolation beating Benjamin McNair (Linfield) 6-1, 6-0 and then Brenden Barrows (Lewis & Clark) 4-6, Ret. (Inj.) before falling to Lombardi in the semi-finals.
The third Poet to take part in the draw was senior Hunter Kettering (Pleasanton, Calif.) who picked up back-to-back losses. First in the main draw to Gordon Barrows (Lewis & Clark) 6-1, 6-3 before going down 6-2, 6-4 to Nathan Saragoza (Linfield).
Van Butselaar and Kettering matched up together in doubles but had a tough opening round with the No. 4 seed, William Leach/Spencer Watanabe (George Fox) falling 8-3. They then made their way into the back draw where they would suffer a similar fate but this time to Benjamin McNair/Luis Rojas (Linfield) 8-2.
