WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Tennis team had a tough match-up with No. 28 George Fox University falling 7-2 at the Richard Ettinger Tennis Courts.
The Purple & Gold fell behind early 2-1 after doubles with their lone win coming at No. 2 from Pim Van Der Veer (Amsterdam, Netherlands) and Matt Yanuck (Studio City, Calif.) pulling out an 8-7 (5) victory. Chris Palacio (El Centro, Calif.) and Jesse Eccles (Queenstown, New Zealand) battled at No. 3 but couldn't overcome a late break falling 8-5.
Yanuck carried this momentum into singles where he won in straights at No. 3 beating Alex Namba 7-5, 6-3. This gave the Poets their second point on the afternoon but they couldn't do anything else after that. Thomas Koszowski (Denver, CO) fought at No. 2 against Keaten Baker taking the opening set 6-3. But Baker was able to fight back taking the second 6-3 before pulling out the 6-2 win in the third.
Eccles also came up unlucky at No. 5 against Pete Gibson. He dropped the opening set 6-3 but was able to force a third with a 7-5 win in the second. But in the deciding frame Eccles was unable to overcome a single break as he fell 6-4.
Palacio had an opportunity at No. 6 going to a breaker in the opening set against Jonah Wafula but he too couldn't capitalize falling 7-6, 7-5. At the top spot Van Der Veer played tough against Will Leach but was broken in each set falling 7-5, 6-3.
