Sagehens blitz Poets with early goals

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Pomona-Pitzer scored early and often on the second day of the WWPA Championships as it downed the Poets, 14-5, on Saturday morning at the Sullivan Aquatic Center.

The Poets (13-20) will try and salvage their WWPA Tournament tomorrow morning in the ninth place game against Chapman. The start of that contest is scheduled for 8 am.

The Sagehens scored five goals in each the first and second quarters and led 10-3 at the intermission. Wes Paulson scored an early goal at 7:13 of the first quarter to answered Pomona-Pitzer's score on its first possession but the Sagehens rattled off the next five goals to lead 6-1 at the 5:57 mark of the second.

Rilesh Desai ended the drought with his first of two goals at 4:54 and nearly three minutes later added his second with 2:11 left before the half to keep the Poets within four goals at 7-3.

The Sagehens scored the first four goals of the second half before Robert Nihei put away his first of the game with 38 seconds before the end of the third frame.

Paulson scored the final goal of the morning for the purple and gold with 3:13 left in regulation.

Desai had two assists and drew three ejections while WWPA Newcomer of the Year Erick Gonzalez had a pair of assists.

Chad Evenrud made just five saves in only one half of work. Chris Maloney recorded four saves in the third stanza and Ryan Rock made four saves in the final frame.
