LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Water Polo team remains perfect in Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) play as they rolled Occidental College 18-12 at Taylor Pool.
Saturday the Poets put up 18 goals, the most all season led by senior attacker Aidan Tol (Tustin, Calif.) who registered five with three assists.
The Purple & Gold got off to a hot start connecting on their first four possessions to go in front 4-0. Oxy came back with two of their own but another couple strikes by the Poets would give them a 6-4 lead after the first quarter of play.
Tyler Fields (Norwalk, Calif.) came out quickly and added his first of the game to start things off in the second moving the score to 7-4. The Tigers fought back to stay within striking distance soon after cutting the deficit to one but Ryan Flores (Whittier, Calif.) and Tol were able to give the Poets a 9-6 lead at the break.
The margin increased to seven following the third quarter as Whittier outscored Oxy 5-1 in the period and they would roll from there tacking on another four in the final eight minutes to grab the road victory.
Carlos Heredia Viteri (Commerce, Calif.) added to the offense with three goals and two assists, while Fields chipped in with three goals and an assist.
The Poets outshot the Tigers 36-24 and was 6-11 on power-play opportunities but made their impact on defense forcing 16 turnovers.
Whittier remains on the road as they travel to take on the University of La Verne this Wednesday, September 27 beginning at 4:00pm.
