CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Water Polo team opened up the Gary Troyer Tournament Friday with a 13-9 win over Division I Iona College.
The Purple & Gold have now moved over .500 at 8-7.
Iona jumped out in front 2-0 in the early stages of the first quarter but that wouldn't hold as Emilio Maldonado (Chula Vista, Calif.), Justin Contreras (Hacienda Heights, Calif.), and Hans Zdolsek (Linkoping, Sweden) would add back-to-back-to-back goals that moved the score to 3-2.
Iona got back into the drivers seat in the second outscoring the Purple & Gold 5-3 to go into the half up 7-6 but again that lead wouldn't hold as WC would outscore the Gaels 7-2 over the final 16 minutes to come away with the lopsided victory.
Spanning from the 2nd quarter into the 4th, Whittier had a 9-1 run that put the game out of reach. Zdolsek led all scorers with three goals, while Maldonado, Aidan Tol (Tustin, Calif.), and Marc-Andre Roy (Montreal, Canada) would register two apiece.
Murat Ersoz (Istanbul, Turkey) was back in goal following an illness and finished with four saves and three steals. Whittier outshot Iona 18-14 but was 0-10 on power play opportunities, which included missing a 5-meter penalty.
Whittier remains at the Gary Troyer Tournament for their second game today, which is at 6:00pm against McKendree.
