WHITTIER, Calif. –The Whittier College Men's Water Polo team dismissed Occidental College quickly Wednesday evening as they rolled the Tigers 20-6 at the Lillian Slade Aquatic Center.
The Purple & Gold have now won four of their last five as they improve to 13-10, 9-1 SCIAC.
Whittier jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead and then stretched that to 11-3 at the break before outscoring Oxy 9-3 in the second half.
A total of 24 players saw the pool on the evening led by Carlos Heredia Viteri (Commerce, Calif.) who totaled five goals on six shots. He was joined by Hans Zdolsek (Linkoping, Sweden) with four, Tim Aakhus (Bakersfield, Calif.) with three goals, an assist and a steal, and Chad Portugal (La Habra Heights, Calif.) with a pair of goals and an assist.
The Poets opened the game with three straight before Oxy found the goal at the 3:05 mark in the first quarter. After that, WC went on a 7-1 run that moved their lead to 10-2 before using a 6-0 run soon after that made the score 16-2.
Despite seeing the Tigers add three in the final eight minutes the Poets still would register four themselves that kept the game out of reach.
Murat Ersoz (Istanbul, Turkey) played 24:00 and finished with 12 saves and two steals. Eliott Bergerson (Whittier, Calif.) got his first action on the season playing the final 2:50 and picked up three saves.
Whittier finished outshooting Occidental 39-29 and was 1-3 on power-plays.
Whittier remains at home this Saturday, October 28 as they host La Verne on Senior Day beginning at 11:00am.
