WHITTIER, Calif. – The Whittier College Men's Water Polo team wrapped up their Alumni Weekend with an 11-9 win over Citrus College Saturday.
Coming off of a lopsided 20-9 victory over La Verne in the morning, the Purple & Gold kept it going to complete the sweep on the day. They held an early 4-2 lead after the first quarter and held a one goal advantage at the half before using a shutout 3-0 third quarter that proved the difference in the win.
Despite the Owls putting up four in the fourth, they couldn't complete the comeback as they fell by two at the Lillian Slade Aquatic Center.
Carlos Heredia Viteri (Commerce, Calif.) led the offense with three goals and three steals. Ryan Flores (Whittier, Calif.) added two goals and Tim Aakhus (Bakersfield, Calif.), Cornelis Kriek (Pretoria, South Africa), Marc-Andre Roy (Montreal, Canada), Justin Contreras (Hacienda Heights, Calif.), Chad Portugal (La Habra Heights, Calif.), and Tyler Fields (Norwalk, Calif.) each added one a piece.
Murat Ersoz (Istanbul, Turkey) played in goal and totaled seven saves with four steals. Whittier outshot Citrus 32-19, was 2-9 on power-play chances and totaled 16 steals.
